Orrick Earns Conference Defensive Player of the Week
Oct. 21, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - Concluding a successful weekend for the first-year libero, Emily Orrick has been named the Missouri Valley Conference (MVC) Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office Monday. Orrick collected 60 digs, nine assists and two service aces against Northern Iowa and Drake this past weekend while averaging 8.57 digs per set in the process.
Against the Panthers, Orrick tied her career-high with 30 digs and added six assists while solidifying the back court for the Redbirds. The Mackinaw, Ill., native's strong defensive presence helped limit UNI to a .111 combined attack-percentage. Orrick was crucial in keeping several long rallies alive with multiple diving saves and an all-around thorough demonstration of hustle.
The following day, Orrick once again added 30 digs to her stat line while also collecting three assists and two service aces in the win over the Bulldogs. The former two-time community college All-American was also perfect in service reception, converting 20 passes on 20 attempts. Orrick's defense limited the Bulldogs to a team .114 attack percentage as the first-year Redbird collected nearly half of the team's 64 total digs.
On the season, Orrick has 342 digs, averaging 4.75 digs per set. The Lincoln Land Community College standout has also added 49 assists and 18 service aces through 20 matches, helping the Redbirds to a 15-5 overall record, including an 8-1 mark in conference play. Orrick currently ranks fifth all-time in program history in digs per set.
The Illinois State volleyball team will return to action Tuesday, Oct. 22, in Redbird Arena for a non-conference match against the Valparaiso Crusaders at 7:05 p.m. (CT).
