INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Illinois State volleyball team will once again travel to Indianapolis, Ind., for their final pre-season tournament of the year. The Redbirds will take part in the Butler tournament, opening weekend play Friday against host Butler at 10 a.m. (CT).

The following day, the Redbirds are scheduled to take on 15th ranked Michigan State at 10 a.m. (CT), followed by Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) at 2 p.m. (CT).

The Redbirds are 6-1 on the season, matching their best start since 1992. Coming off a tournament championship last weekend in Reno, Nev., Illinois State compiled a 4-0 record, defeating Grand Canyon, Nevada, Weber State and UC Davis. The previous weekend, ISU competed in the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) Hampton Inn Invitational while picking up victories over IUPUI and Florida Gulf Coast.

Butler comes into the tournament with a 7-1 record and is currently riding a three-match winning-streak. The Bulldogs head into the weekend competition after picking up a straight-set sweep victory Tuesday, Sept. 10, over Wright State. The Redbirds hold a 3-0 record all-time against the Bulldogs, having last played Nov. 8, 1994 in Normal, Ill.

Michigan State, coming off a 2012 season in which they made it to the sweet-sixteen of the NCAA tournament, carries a 5-1 record on the season. Coming off back-to-back home matches against Oregon and Oregon State, the Spartans own a three-match win streak and are currently ranked 15th in the nation in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll. All-time, the Redbirds are 9-5 against the Spartans, last defeating them Sept. 1, 1990 in a five-set thriller at home.

IPFW is the final opponent in the tournament for Illinois State, and currently own a 6-2 record. Hailing from the Summit League, the same conference as IUPUI whom the Redbirds opened the 2013 season against, the Mastodons are also riding a three-match winning streak, most recently defeating Western Michigan 3-0 on the road. This will mark the first time in program-history that the Redbirds will compete against the Mastodons.
