NORMAL, Ill. - Brooklyn Hlafka led the Illinois State volleyball team (16-8, 9-3) Saturday night with 11 kills, but despite her effort at the net, the Redbirds fell to Loyola (10-15, 5-8) in straight sets(21-25, 21-25, 25-27). Hlafka had a solo block and tallied 13.5 points during the match.

LeighAnn Hranka added eight kills with a hitting percentage of .353 and had 10 points, while Ashley Rosch added eight kills and seven digs for nine points. Kaitlyn Early distributed 24 assists, while Emily Orrick had 18 digs. Orrick and Danielle Donahue each recorded two service aces in the match.

Illinois State took an early lead, 4-1, but Loyola regrouped and went on a 5-0 run to take a 6-4 advantage. The Redbirds got back within one point, 10-9, but the Ramblers went on an 8-3 run to gain an 18-12 advantage, forcing another ISU timeout. Illinois State took momentum off of kills by Hranka and Hlafka, cutting Loyola's lead to three, 18-15, as the Ramblers took their first timeout of the set. Despite getting back within a point, ISU couldn't overcome the early deficit and fell, 25-21. Hranka had four kills, while Hlafka tallied three. Ratasha Garbes dished out eight assists, while three Redbirds had service aces.

The two teams exchanged points early in the set, including five ties, but back-to-back kills by Hranka and Early forced Loyola to take a timeout, as Illinois State took an 18-15 advantage. The Ramblers took the momentum late in the set with a 3-0 run off of two Redbird errors to force an Illinois State timeout. Back-to-back service aces by Loyola increased its lead to two, 23-21. Two Redbird errors ended the set, 25-21, as the Ramblers went into the locker room up 2-0. ISU was led by Rosch at the net in the second set, as she had five kills while Early handed out 13 assists.

In the third set, Illinois State took a four-point lead, 8-4, causing Loyola to take an early timeout. ISU increased its lead to six, but after three-straight Redbird errors, the Ramblers cut ISU's lead to one, 15-14. The Redbirds regained momentum and took a 19-16 advantage, but Loyola wasn't going down without a fight. LUC battled back and tied the game 22-22. After a tightly contested set, two kills by Loyola's Laura Purcell secured the win for the Ramblers, 27-25. The third set victory gave LU the win for the match. Hlfaka led ISU with four kills, while Stacey Niao and Rosch both added three. Early had 11 assists, while Orrick and Early both collected six digs.
