NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team will try to extend its Missouri Valley Conference winning streak to four as it travels to play Southern Illinois Saturday (April 18) at Carbondale, Ill. at 1 p.m., and Evansville Sunday (April 19) at the Carson Center Tennis Courts at 10 a.m. The Redbirds are currently third in the Valley standings, as announced Tuesday by the league office, with an overall record of 12-8 on the season and a Valley record by 4-2.

"Our goal was always to be in the top-three of the conference," said head coach Chris Hoover. "In my 15 years as head coach, we have finished third or higher 12 times, and this year is no different. I know we can stay in the top-three if we just finish this weekend hard and go to the championship ready to play. Southern Illinois and Evansville are the only two teams in our way of finishing third, and they will be tough competitors this weekend."

Illinois State went undefeated this past weekend (April 11-12) besting Valley opponents Northern Iowa, 4-3, and Drake, 6-1, in the last two home matches of the season.

Redbird freshman Hannah Esker leads the Redbirds with an overall singles dual record of 14-5. She is also 4-1 in conference play with her only conference loss coming at the hands of Valley leader Wichita State. Esker, along with Carmen Peters and Tanja Hrovatic, is on a three-matching winning streak in singles play.

Southern Illinois is currently fifth in the Valley standing with a 13-7 overall record in dual play this season and 2-3 in Valley play. The Salukis are coming off a 6-1 loss to Valley leader Wichita State Sunday (April 12), as the No. 68 Salukis' doubles pairing of Martina Vianna Ce and Vishakha Sheoran fell in the Flight 3 doubles. Southern Illinois will host Indiana State Friday (April 17) before facing Illinois State.

Evansville has an overall dual season record of 9-8, after losing to No. 2 in the Valley Indiana State, 4-3, Wednesday (April 15). The lost brought the Purple Aces' Valley record to 2-4. The Purple Aces are currently sixth in the Valley standings. Evansville will host conference opponent Bradley Friday (April 17) before playing Illinois State Sunday (April 19).

Southern Illinois leads the all-time series over Illinois State, 19-17. The last time these two teams met was April 20, 2008, in Illinois State's last home match of the 2008 season. The Redbirds defeated the Salukis, 5-2, and went 4-2 in singles play.

Illinois State leads the all-time series over Evansville, 18-0. April, 19, 2008, was the last time the Redbirds faced the Purple Aces, besting Evansville, 5-1. Due to time constraints, the doubles competition was not held. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
