Tigges Named Valley Scholar-Athlete of the Week
Feb. 12, 2014
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State women's tennis player Phyllis Tigges was selected as the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week for the first time this season, as announced by Valley Commissioner Doug Elgin Wednesday. Tigges was honored with the award due to her performances during the time period of February 3-9. Tigges is the seventh Redbird to receive the honor this season.
Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
Tigges led the Redbird women's tennis team to multiple wins over Butler and Indianapolis over the weekend. She helped ISU sweep Butler in doubles competition. Currently, Tigges is undefeated at the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles positions. During the first match of the two-match weekend, Tigges and doubles partner, freshman Madeliene Baillon, battled Indianapolis' Allie Smith and Taylor Eckert in the No. 1 position to capture a 9-7 win over the Greyhounds.
The following day, Tigges and Baillon kept up the momentum and swept Butler's Stephani McLoughlin and Kailey Eaton, 6-0. In singles play, Tigges recorded a 6-2, 6-1 victory over UIndy's Konstantina Adami in the No. 2 singles position. The following day, Tigges won again, edging Butler's Maria Mendes for a 6-0, 6-2 victory in No. 2 singles. Tigges helped guide ISU to its third-consecutive win of the season. The senior agribusiness major holds a cumulative grade-point average (GPA) of 3.93 and had a 4.0 GPA for the fall semester.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
The Redbirds will be back on the court Friday, as they take on Creighton at 3 p.m., in Omaha, Neb.
