Two Matches in Kansas for Women's Tennis

Feb. 9, 2012

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team (1-2) heads to Lawrence, Kan., Feb. 11-12, to compete against UTEP (Saturday) and Kansas (Sunday) at the Jayhawk Tennis Center. UTEP heads into play with a record of 1-4 after two consecutive losses to Northern Arizona and the Air Force. Kansas posts a 1-0 record after winning its season opener against UMKC on Tuesday.

This will be the first time the Redbirds face UTEP and Kansas in the school's history for a dual match.

Head coach of the Redbirds, Chris Hoover, is looking forward to the weekend of competition.

"We're looking forward to two matches in a row," said Hoover. "We can make adjustments after the first match, based on where we think improvements are needed, and get right back into competition the next day. I'm expecting stiff competition from both schools this weekend, so hopefully we'll be able to capitalize on all we've been practicing, hit hard and bring home some wins."

Team captain Hannah Esker knows that the matches will be a chance for the Redbirds to build momentum for the team.

"I am excited about this weekend," said Esker. "I have seen improvements in the team's play after only three matches. I know that we will have to bring some fight this weekend as Kansas will be a tough opponent. I anticipate UTEP will give us a very competitive match. Our team has done great things in the past, and I expect nothing less than great this season."

Play is set to begin Saturday at 11 a.m., against UTEP and at noon Sunday against Kansas. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
