Redbirds Soar Past Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - The Illinois State women's tennis team edged Indianapolis, 7-2, while on the road, recording only two losses during the day's competition.
"We played really well today," head coach Chris Hooversaid. "We are looking forward to tomorrow's match, and we're hoping to carry momentum from today."
In doubles play, ISU recorded a shutout-victory in the Flight 3 positions. Phyllis Tigges and Madeliene Baillon battled Indianapolis' Allie Smith and Taylor Eckert in the Flight 1 doubles match to capture a 9-7 win over the Greyhounds, while Heather Nisbet and Kadi Ilves defeated Brooke Boyts and Kasey Land in a shutout, 8-0. In the Flight 2 doubles position, Indianapolis' Selenay Heper and Macey Speer edged ISU's Emmie Marx and Sierra Stone, 8-6.In singles play, ISU dominated Indianapolis in five-out-of-the-six matches played during the competition. Marx defeated Smith, 6-0, 6-2, and Tigges edged Maria Mendes for a 6-0, 6-2 victory. In the Singles Flight 3 position, freshman Natalia Parchowskafell to Selenay Heper in a third-set tie-breaker, 6-3, 3-6, 10-8. Baillon also recorded a win over Brooke Boyts, 6-0, 6-1, and Ilves edged Taylor Eckert, 6-2, 6-3. Senior Gabriella Phillips claimed victory decided by a third-set tie-breaker over Kasey Land, 2-6, 6-2, 10-7. The match was played using Division II scoring, leaving the final score, 7-2, in Illinois State's favor. Next, the Redbirds will take on Butler, Sunday, Feb. 9, at 10 a.m. CT.
