ISU Women's Tennis Heads to El Paso, Texas
Feb. 4, 2010
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team is back on the road heading to the Lone Star state where they will compete against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, University of Texas-El Paso and Sam Houston State. The three-day tour will begin Friday, Feb. 5, against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.
Losing their spring opener to Purdue, 7-0, the Redbirds quickly picked up their game in a dual match last Sunday in Indiana. Illinois State downed Butler, 5-2, and Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), 6-1. Ending the weekend strong, head coach Chris Hoover has good expectations for this weekend's matches.
"We've been trying to build a little adversity into our schedule so we can learn to be mentally tough," Hoover said. "We don't know these teams but we look forward to the challenge. We are going to be playing outdoors and we are excited about that. I think we are beginning to see that we are potentially a pretty good team. If we come prepared to play, we can beat a lot of teams."
Senior Julia Zubkova has started off the spring season at the No. 1 doubles position, and will continue to compete with partner Franziska Steinhardt. During last Sunday's match-ups, Zubkova swept the No. 1 doubles and No. 2 singles points, earning her the MVC Athlete of the Week.
The match will open with doubles play at 9 a.m. at the El Paso Tennis Center.
