The Illinois State women's tennis team was defeated, 7-0, in the Redbirds' first road match of the spring season at Illinois Sunday evening.

The competition began with three flights of doubles play, as Phyllis Tigges and Madeline Baillon of ISU defeated Illinois' Allison Falkin and Jerricka Boone, 6-1; however, the remaining ISU flights both fell to Illinois. Duo Heather Nisbet and Kadi Ilves fell to Illinois' Melissa Kopinski and Alexis Casati, 6-3, while Emmie Marx and Ashton Nisbet fell to Misia Kedzierski and Louise Kwong, 6-0.

"I thought one doubles played really well," head coach Chris Hoover said. "Carolina Abello and Kadi [Ilves] had some chances in their matches and Phyllis [Tigges] did at times too. It's a process, and I think we took a step forward."

In singles play, Illinois claimed victory over ISU in all six flights of the competition. Abello battled Illinois' Boone in a third set tie-breaker that resulted in a 7-5, 6-6 (8-6) loss.

Next, the Redbirds take on Saint Louis at home this Friday, Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. at Evergreen Racquet Club in Bloomington, Ill.
