NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State's No. 1 singles Aniko Kiss and four other Redbirds advanced to the finals after the second day of the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship.

In singles, Kiss played her way to the Flight 1 finals beating Kate Chybowski of Evansville in a hard fought three set match, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4. Freshman Gabriella Phillips advanced to the Flight 5 finals after beating Creighton's Sarah Cadwallader, 6-1, 6-2, while in Flight 6, sophomore Stefanie Youngberg won against Leesa Cadwallader of Creighton, 6-0, 6-0. In Flight 7, freshman Ashton Nisbet defeated Jess Raatz of Evansville, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, while twin sister freshman Heather Nisbet defeated Ashley Oyakawa of Creighton, 6-0, 6-0. The pair will face off against each other in the finals on Sunday.

Head coach Chris Hoover expressed his thoughts on the second day of play.

"Today we did alright," said Hoover. "We had a few disappointing matches, but I think we did well. Four out of seven finals is pretty good. Aniko had a hard match but came through with a win and our freshman really stepped it up."

In doubles action, Maack and Esker lost in the Flight 2 semifinals to Northern Iowa's Krissy Lankelma and Stefannia Sampaio, 8-6, while Heather Nisbet and Sarah Streitz lost to Evansville's Aleksandra Dzakula and Carolyn Caire in the Flight 3 semifinals, 8-3.

"Overall today was a tough day with a few bright spots," said Hoover. "We weren't able to advance anyone to the doubles finals, but we're ready to play in Sunday's championship matches. Hopefully we will come away with a few singles titles."

The final rounds of the tournament will begin at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts in Normal, Ill. Play will feature three doubles matches followed by seven singles matches.
