Redbirds Fall to Salukis In Last MVC Match Of The Season
April 19, 2014
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's tennis team fell to Missouri Valley Conference foe Southern Illinois, 5-2, in its last spring match of the season. The Redbirds ended the 2013 spring season with an overall record of 9-9 and 2-4 in the MVC.
In their last regular season match, duo Tigges and Madeliene Baillon battled to record an undefeated season in the Doubles No. 1 position. After falling behind in the beginning of the game, the Redbird pair rallied the Salukis to tie at 6-6 before Baillon became ill, forcing ISU to forfeit at Doubles No. 1.
"It was a tough day for us and nobody anticipated what was going to happen to Madie," head coach Chris Hoover said. "Everybody stepped up nicely and did a nice job fighting. The match wasn't decided until we were about finished and I think we had a really good shot at it right up until the end. What we need to do now is focus on getting healthy so we can give it our all at the championships this weekend."
Kadi Ilves and Tigges were the only Redbirds to score during the match, earning ISU its two points against SIU. Ilves in the Singles No. 4 position who rallied Polina Dozortseva, 4-6, 7-6, 10-8, in a third-set tie-breaker, and Tigges in the Singles No. 1 position who beat Natasha Tomishima, 6-1, 6-1.
