BLOOMINGTON, Ill. - Illinois State never trailed after earning the doubles point en route to a 5-2 non-conference win over Milwaukee Saturday afternoon at the Evergreen Racquet Club. Winners of seven out of their last nine matches, the Redbirds improved to 7-4 this season, while Milwaukee dropped to 4-7.

Illinois State is now 2-1 at home after playing its previous seven matches on the road. Following an upcoming road trip to Marquette March 21, ISU will return to Normal, Ill., for two-straight outdoor contests at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts.

"I think the team was happy to be on familiar ground," ISU head coach Chris Hoover said following Saturday's victory. "Everybody brought the fight today, and that is what we are working for day in and day out."

The Redbirds secured the doubles point thanks to an 8-3 win by the No. 2 team of Emmie Marx and Sierra Stone over Hayley Marshall and Alysa Straub, followed by a No. 3 victory, 8-7 (8), by ISU's Heather Nisbet and Kadi Ilves over Christina Colarossi and Kristin Kurer.

In singles play, Marx again helped the Redbirds by earning a No. 2 victory over Marshall, 6-3, 6-4. Carolina Abello also won her No. 3 matchup against Colarossi, 6-1, 6-0, and Stone topped Aerielle Pendleton, 6-4, 6-0 in No. 4 singles. Meanwhile in No. 6 singles, Ilves beat Kurer, 6-0, 6-3.

In a match that required a third-set tiebreaker, Phyllis Tigges was edged by Diana Tokar in No. 1 singles, 6-4, 4-6, 10-6. Madeliene Baillon suffered the only other Redbird defeat, falling in No. 5 to Straub, 6-3, 6-1. The No. 1 Milwaukee doubles team of Tokar and Dana Shannon also earned victories over Tigges and Baillon.

The Redbirds now return to the road for their non-conference finale March 21 at Marquette, with a 1 p.m. first-serve scheduled. Illinois will then open Missouri Valley Conference play outside at the Gregory Street Tennis Courts March 26 versus Bradley at 3 p.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
