MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Sophomore Aniko Kiss brought the Illinois State women's tennis team its sole point as the Redbirds fell to Marquette, 6-1, on Valentine's Day at the Helfaer Tennis Stadium. The loss ended the team's four match winning streak giving them a 5-3 record on the season.

The contest started with doubles matchups where Julia Zubkova and Franziska Steinhardt were looking for their fifth-straight doubles win. Marquette's Christina Ruiz and Rachael Hush ultimately snapped their streak at the No. 1 position, 8-5. The only win in doubles was at the No. 3 position where Hannah Esker and Carmen Peters claimed a victory against Gillian Hush and Maggie Wilson, 8-5.

"The doubles teams played hard today," head coach Chris Hoover said. "I would have liked to see a win for Julia and Franziska but they played tough competitors. Hannah and Carmen played great and had a win but unfortunately it wasn't enough. Today we didn't play to win but we also didn't play to lose. Marquette jumped all over us and it wasn't good."

In singles action, Kiss claimed the only Redbird victory of the day. The No. 1 singles position saw Kiss best Paola Calderson in two close sets, 7-6, 7-5. Senior Natalia Lech missed that No. 5 singles action due to injury and Peters filled the void.

"Aniko pulled out a good win today," Hoover said. "She's been looking for a win and her victory is well deserved. Natalia hyper-extended her arm last night and after doubles play I took her out and filled the No. 5 position with Carmen. Overall, I think we could have been much better today."

The Illinois State women's tennis team will return to the court on Sunday, Feb. 21, with a home match against Morehead State. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
