Iowa Sweeps Illinois State, 7-0

IOWA CITY, Iowa - The Illinois State women's tennis team (1-2) fell to Iowa in its home opener, 7-0, at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex on Saturday.
The Hawkeyes powered through the Redbird singles lineup. Phyllis Tigges finished first, falling to Shelby Talcott, 6-1, 6-1. Aniko Kiss was defeated in the No.1 flight against Iowa's nationally-ranked Sonja Molnar, 6-1, 6-1. In her second match back this season due to an injury, Carolina Abello came the closest to a victory, posting a defeat of 6-4, 6-4 to Christina Harazin. Stefanie Youngberg was defeated by Ellen Silver, 6-1, 6-2, and Iowa's Katie Zordani bested team captain Hannah Esker, 6-4, 6-1. Newcomer Emmie Marx held out the longest of the singles competitions, finally falling to opponent Morven McCulloch, 6-4, 6-1.
Iowa's Molnar and Talcott paired up to defeat their respective singles opponents of Kiss and Tigges in flight one doubles play, 8-2. Esker and partner Heather Nisbet fell shortly after, losing 8-3 to Iowa's Ellen Silver and Zordani. Marx and newly-returned Ariane Maack posted a loss of 8-3 to Ally Majercik and McCulloch.
The Redbirds return to the courts on Feb. 11 in Lawrence, Kan. against UTEP. Play is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
