BLOOMINGTON, lll - A strong doubles start by the Illinois State women's tennis team (1-2) aided in Friday night's 4-3, victory over Saint Louis (1-3), at the Evergreen Racquet Club. Emmie Marx and Madeline Baillon's performances led the way for a determined Redbird squad.
ISU earned the doubles point against the Billikens, as Marx and Carolina Abello beat Natalia Yacaman and Maria Toro, 6-4, and Baillon and Phyllis Tigges defeated Aspen Cervin and Stephanie Hollis, 6-3. Heather Nisbet and Kadi Ilves added a victory of their own, beating Brooke Urzendowski and Taylor Monken, 6-2.
Head coach Chris Hoover was encouraged by the way his squad competed in doubles action.
"I thought we finally came out and competed up and down the line. I thought our doubles looked good," Hoover said. "We had four super-tie breakers, so it was an interesting dynamic. It's dangerous, and we were fortunate that we came out more on top today."
In singles play, Marx defeated Cervin in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 10-5. Baillon beat Toro, 6-3, 6-3. Meanwhile, Tigges lost a three-set battle to Hollis, 3-6, 6-1, 12-10. Abello was defeated by Yacaman, 6-3, 7-5. Ilves defeated Urzendowski in three sets, 6-0, 4-6, 11-9.
Heather Nisbet lost to Madeline Jolly in three sets, 6-2, 5-7, 10-8, while Gabby Phillips' match went unfinished against Taylor Monken.
Next, the Redbirds travel to Indianapolis, Ind., Feb. 8, to face Indianapolis at 1 p.m.
