Redbirds in third after first day at Zippy Invitational

AKRON, Ohio - The Illinois State swimming and diving team is in third place with 334 points, after their first day of competition in Akron, Ohio. The Redbirds recorded a number personal and season best times, a first place finish and a Zippy Invitational record during both the preliminaries and finals of today's meet. The Redbirds are currently behind Ohio (541) and Akron (350), with two days of competition remaining.

Head coach Steve Paska looks at the team's performance as a fantastic start to the weekend.

"Every preliminary swim we had this morning was either a season or personal best time, getting us off to a great start," Paska said. "I believe our line-ups are strong for the next two days and I am looking forward to seeing how the team performs for the rest of the weekend."

Sophomore Danielle Schumacher led the Redbirds with her swims in the 500-yard freestyle. Schumacher recorded a personal best time and first place finish in the preliminaries (4:56.70) and finals (4:56.12), as well as setting a Zippy Invitational event record. She also led off the 200-yard freestyle relay with a personal best time in the 50-yard freestyle (24.93).

"Danielle broke the existing meet record this morning, and then re-broke it again during the finals," Paska said. "She swam a terrific race and followed the plan we discussed. She also recorded the third fastest 500-yard freestyle time in school history."

The Redbirds had a number of other personal and season best performances throughout the day. The 200-yard freestyle relay of senior Amy Schaefer, junior Jessica McGee, sophomore Jeanette Nolte and freshman Erica Halley set a season best time of 1:37.15. Tori Alland and Lauren Terzis also recorded season best time in the 500-yard freestyle of 4:59.45 and 5:01.16. Sophomores Brianna Winkler and Emily Susmarski both recorded personal best times in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries of 25.31 and 25.47. Junior Jillian Olson earned a personal best time during her swim in the 200-yard individual medley finals with a time of 2:11.89. Senior Ashley Bachler and junior Michele Stoeppelman also both recorded season best times in the 500-yard freestyle of 5:06.25 and 5:08.37.



Diving coach Phil Hoffmann is pleased with the diving performance after the first day in Akron.

"Polly had a very solid meet and put together a good list of 6 dives," Hoffmann said. "The group held together well during the entire meet and I look forward to tomorrows event, while we continue to work on the basics and preparation we have practiced."

Polly Hirt placed ninth in the 1-meter dive with a score of 197.00 during the preliminaries, missing the finals by just over a point.
