Janonis, Steinbach Sweep MVC Weekly Honors
Nov. 7, 2007
NORMAL, Ill. - Due to continued success, Illinois State diver, senior Katie Janonis, has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Diver of the Week for the third week in a row. Senior team captain Christine Steinbach was also named Valley Swimmer of the Week, marking the second consecutive week that Illinois State has swept the league's weekly honors.
Steinbach had outstanding performances over the weekend, leading Illinois State to a first-place finish at home against Western Illinois. Individually, Steinbach finished first in the 500-yard freestyle with a season-best time of 5:16.85, placing her eighth overall in the Valley.
Steinbach also won the 1000-yard freestyle with a final tally of 10:47.41, placing fourth overall in the MVC. She finished the evening off as the third leg in the 800-yard freestyle relay with a time of 8:12.16.
The Redbirds then traveled to Butler to compete in a triangular meet with Youngstown State. A number of outstanding performances enabled ISU to sweep the tri-meet. Individually, Steinbach finished first in the 1650-yard freestyle event with a time of 18:03.23, ranking third overall in the Valley.
Head coach Steve Paska felt that Steinbach's efforts proved worthy of the award.
"Christine helped the team come out victorious last Friday (Nov. 2) against Western Illinois," said Paska. "She had season-best performances in both the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyle. She kept the streak going the following day at Butler and swam the mile (1650-yard freestyle) for the first time all year. She had solid performances both days and it was a true test of her abilities. It is a well deserved honor because Christine has been consistent all year long."
Janonis won both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards over the weekend at home against Western Illinois and on the road at Butler in a tri-meet with Youngstown State. She led the Redbirds in the diving events against Western Illinois, with a final score of 244.10 on the 1-meter board and 221.87 on the 3-meter.
Janonis then tallied a score of 241.09 on the 1-meter and 248.25 on the 3-meter against Butler and Youngstown. She currently leads the Valley on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards.
Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann felt that Janonis' consistency has enabled her to receive the award three weeks in a row.
"Winning three weeks in a row shows how consistent she has been throughout the season," said Hoffmann. "It is a great honor for her and it shows that she is one of the top divers in the Valley. It is good for her confidence and will help with our preparation for competition against Illinois this weekend (Nov. 10), the Akron Invitational (Nov. 30-Dec. 2) and when we travel to Puerto Rico (Jan. 6)."
Steinbach and Janonis join the rest of the Illinois State swimmers and divers when they host Illinois Saturday at Horton Pool. The meet is slated to begin at noon.
