Redbirds Head to the Relays
Oct. 10, 2013
NORMAL, Ill. - - Illinois State swimming and diving will head to South Bend, Ind., Friday for the Dennis Stark Relays. The Redbirds will be competing at Rolfs Aquatic Center against Notre Dame, Auburn, Indiana, Valparaiso and Cleveland State at 4 p.m. CT.
This year's meet consists of teams from all over the country who are consistently ranked in the nation's top 20 Division I teams. Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann is excited about the format of this weekend's meet and for the Redbirds to face against his mentor.
"This weekend's format of events is always a fun meet for the swimmers and divers and with the competition this year it will be one heck of a meet," said Hoffmann. "The Redbird divers will be paired up in a nontraditional relay team competing on the 1-meter board and their scores are combined. This meet will help all of the swimmers and divers prepare for regional matchups later in the season with teams like Notre Dame and Indiana in the lineup. I am also eager to be able to meet up with my mentor, Drew Johansen the new coach at Indiana to see what talent his team is bringing."
Other teams will also be competing on the 3-meter board in synchronized events. "Competing on the 3-meter board can be harder for our divers because we only have one at our pool and are unable to practice synchronized events," said Hoffmann.
This year's relays will be comprised of ten swimming events structured to showcase a number of strokes. Head coach Steve Paska is excited to head to the Dennis Stark Relays again and see the Redbirds compete in a unique setting once more this season.
"We have been going to these relays for about a decade now and this is usually the competitive start to our season, but this year we have had a number of these experiences already under our belt," said coach Paska. "This weekend we are really looking to working on our sprinting and racing as much as possible and to continue our trend of being ready to race."
