NORMAL, Ill. -

The Illinois State swimming and diving team will compete in Horton Pool for the first time this season Friday, October 1, at 7 p.m. for the Red/White intrasquad meet. This meet is a Redbird tradition and is held at the beginning of every season.

Head coach Steve Paska looks to Friday’s meet, to set the team up for the 2010-11 season.

“This is the first competition where the entire team will be able to showcase where they are within their individual training programs,” Paska said. “I am looking forward to seeing how the newcomers compete for the first time with the Redbirds and where the future lies for the team. The meet will also allow us to gage where each swimmer is, as we try to determine our best lineup for the competitions that lie ahead.”

The Red/White Meet will split the Redbirds into two teams, where they will compete against each other.

This will be the first meet of the season for the entire swimming and diving team. Nine of the team’s athletes competed in the Southern Illinois distance 1650-yard freestyle and 5K Open Water meets on September 24th and 25th. The Redbirds placed 2nd and 3rd in both events.

Diving coach Phil Hoffmann is going into Friday’s meet with very high expectations.

“We pushed to get everyone meet ready as soon as possible, leading us to be better set up for the beginning of the season,” Hoffmann said. “I hope their training and hard work shows through, and that they will be ready for the season earlier.” Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
