CARBONDALE, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team will start its season off at Southern Illinois for the fifth consecutive year, when the Redbirds compete Friday in the Saluki Miler and Saturday at the 5K open-water race.

The Redbirds will send the majority of their team to compete in this weekend's events against Southern Illinois and Ohio Wesleyan. The Saluki Miler begins at 6 p.m., Friday, at the Recreation Center Pool in Carbondale, Ill., with the men's and women's 1650 IM followed by the 400 IM. On Saturday morning, the team will travel to Little Grassy Lake in Makanda, Ill., where they will participate in the 5K open-water race. This year's events will not include diving, as previous years had.

ISU head swimming and diving coach, Steve Paska,is looking forward to testing the team's talent and progress in this weekend's events, along with giving them a new challenge in a different environment.

"This meet is designed for primarily the distance swimmers.I believe it's an outstanding opportunity for any of the freestyle or IM swimmers that have to train in a different way other than basic swim practice," Paska said. "This will test our swimmers and give an opportunity to evaluate and set short term objectives for training in the upcoming weeks. After this weekend, we will have six-straight weeks of competitions. So far I am very impressed with our team in the water and weight room and I think we are headed in the right direction.
