Falconer Receives Dede Woytowych Endowed Scholarship
May 29, 2009
NORMAL, Ill. - Senior Caitlin Falconer has exemplified leadership in both academics and for the sport of swimming throughout the past three years at Illinois State. Falconer has shown to everyone that she embodies the spirit and positive attitude of a true Redbird student-athlete. Due to her loyalty and passion to Illinois State, Falconer has been awarded the Dede Woytowych Endowed Scholarship for the 2009-10 academic year.
The scholarship was established in 2006, after former Illinois State swimmer Diedre "Dede" Woytowych passed away unexpectedly in 2005. The Woytowych Scholarship is presented annually to a swimmer who follows in Woytowych's footsteps of being a good teammate, hard-worker and possessing a love for the sport of swimming. Head coach Steve Paska, the Woytowych family and the Redbird Athletics Department started the scholarship to keep Woytowych and Illinois State swimming and diving together forever.
Paska feels that Falconer has been influential towards her teammates and has been one of the hardest workers that Paska has had in 24 years at Illinois State.
"It has been a true joy to watch Caitlin grow and succeed as a student and as an athlete," said Paska. "Caitlin shares the same positive attitude, competitive nature and the endless spirit for the being a Redbird swimmer that Dede expressed during her years at Illinois State."
Falconer is humbled and honored to have received the award and has witnessed firsthand the amount of impact that Woytowych's legacy has had on the swimming and diving team.
"It is a great honor to receive this award," said Falconer. "To be compared to someone who has had so much of an impact on the lives of so many people is completely humbling."
Falconer competes in multiple freestyle and breaststroke events, as well as the individual medley. Falconer earned six top-three performances in regular-season dual-meets this past year, including six personal-best performances. At the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships Falconer finished in ninth-place with personal-best times in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke events along with finishing 16th in the 500-yard freestyle event at the championships.
The Dede Woytowych Endowed Scholarship is one of 23 endowed scholarships available to Illinois State student-athletes that are funded by private donors.
