Paska Adds Schuckles To Redbird Swimming Roster
May 5, 2011
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team added another piece to its roster Thursday, when head coach Steve Paska announced the signing of Samantha Schuckles (Schaumburg, Ill./Schaumburg HS) to a National Letter of Intent for the 2011-12 season.
Schuckles will join her fellow Redbird teammates in the fall at ISU and plans to major in exercise science. With her strong times during her prep career, Paska believes Schuckles will be a great asset to the team.
"Sammy is a fantastic addition to our team and will contribute immediately in the backstroke events along with the sprint freestyle events," Paska said. "With her current times in the 100 and 200 backstroke events, she would already be ranked in the top three on Illinois State's all-time personal best list. Sammy has a tremendous work ethic and a solid training foundation from her coaches at Schaumburg High School, Palatine Tiger Sharks and Patriot Aquatic Club. She is an excellent student with a great personality that will be a terrific fit for Illinois State."
Schuckles was a state qualifier during all four of her competitive seasons at Schaumburg High School and was a team captain during her final three years. As a senior in 2010, Schuckles was the sectional champion in the 100-yard backstroke and went on to place 10th in the event at the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Meet with a school-record breaking time of 57.88.
She was also a sectional champion in four events as a sophomore in 2008 (50 free, 100 back, 200 medley relay, 200 free relay) and took home a sectional championship as a freshman in 2007 in the 50-yard freestyle. In addition to her accomplishments swimming, Schuckles is also a standout in the pool in water polo and was named to the Mid-Suburban League Girls Water Polo All Conference Team in 2010 and 2011.
When she was not competing on her high school team, Schuckles swam competitively for the Patriot Aquatic Club for nine years. In March, Schuckles recorded four top-10 performances at the Illinois Senior State Meet which included a third-place finish in the 100-meter backstroke with a time of 57.42, which bested her previous best. She also placed ninth in the 200-yard backstroke with a time of 2:05.30 and was a member of the second-place 400-yard freestyle and third-place 400-yard medley relay teams.
