Zhang Set To Compete At NCAA Diving Regionals For Third Time
March 12, 2014
COLUMBUS, Ohio -Illinois State junior diver Wenting Zhang will look to advance to the NCAA Diving Championship, when she competes for the third-consecutive year in the Zone C qualifier in Columbus, Ohio, Thursday through Saturday.
"It's an exciting time for Wendy and the culmination of another great season for her," diving coach Phil Hoffman said. "I believe it was her best yet. She set two school records throughout the year, both of them at the conference meet when it mattered most, which is something I was very impressed with. This being her third time, I think she is well prepared for the competition this weekend."
Zhang just missed on advancing in last year's Zone C meet, but rebounded for a great junior season. The Shenzhen, China, native topped her previous career-bests and broke her own school diving records with scores of 343.00 (1-meter) and 373.20 (3-meter) at the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Championship to help the Redbirds finish in second place overall.
The two-time MVC Diver of the Year and three-time All-MVC First Team selection will have some tough competition throughout the weekend, but Hoffman believes Zhang is poised to have a strong showing against some of the best divers in the country.
"I look for her to contend for the one of the top spots in Zone C this weekend in Ohio," Hoffman stated. Wendy was just off the mark last year, and with another year of experience and progression we believe she can contend. This is one of the toughest zones each year to advance out of in the country, with most of the Big Ten schools and top MAC opponents as well and Southern Illinois out of the Valley competing.
