Feb. 27, 2014
ST. LOUIS - Coming off a second-place finish at the 2014 Missouri Valley Conference Swimming and Diving Championship, 12 Illinois State student-athletes earned more honors Thursday when they were named to the 2013-14 Missouri Valley Conference Scholar Athlete Team released by the league office.
Scholar-Athlete honors require athletes to have completed at least one year and maintain either a 3.2 grade-point average and obtain all-conference honors, achieve a 3.5 grade-point average and finish top-16 in an individual event at the conference championships, or maintain a 3.8 grade-point average and participate in the MVC championship.
A total of 57 student-athletes qualified for the Valley 2014 Swimming and Diving Scholar-Athlete team, with Illinois State's Kelly Sanks listed among three student-athletes averaging a perfect 4.0 GPA. There were 19 student-athletes at or above an impressive 3.8 grade-point average, including ISU's Maggie Kopp (3.96), now a three-time MVC scholar-athlete selection, and Erica Halley (3.90), who earned all-conference honors for the fourth time in her career, this time as a member of the ISU 400-yard freestyle relay team that won a conference title at the 2014 MVC championship meet.
Those joining their teammates on the squad include All-MVC honorable mention selections Valerie Jones (3.75) and Katelyn Kresal (3.70), All-MVC first-team pick Samantha Schuckles (3.66), four-time conference champion and All-MVC pick Marissa Yontz (3.62), All-MVC selections Courtney Taylor (3.57) and Katherine Nelson (3.52), two-time All-MVC honoree and 2013 MVC Diver of the Year Wenting Zhang (3.44), and All-MVC honorable mention selections April Livingston (3.40) and Keely Hunt (3.28).
Missouri State claimed the most spots on the scholar-athlete team with 13, with Illinois State right behind with a dozen. In addition to their prowess in the classroom, the seven Redbirds took home conference championships at the 2014 MVC Championship meet and nine were selected to the all-conference squad.
