Zhang named MVC Diver of the Week
Jan. 28, 2014
NORMAL, Ill. - The Shenzhen, China native Wenting Zhang has been named by the Missouri Valley Conference as Diver of the week. Zhang was awarded this honor after her performance at the UIC and Butler Invitationals this weekend.
This is the seventh time Zhang has been awarded MVC Diver of the Week this season. She earned the honor after winning both the 1-meter (319.05) and 3-meter (329.90) boards at the UIC Diving Invitational. She was also victorious on the 1-meter(293.70) and 3-meter (305.25) events at the Butler Invitational.
Diving coach Phil Hoffmann believes Zhang receiving this award at this point in the season reflects how she will perform in the weeks to come.
"Zhang earning the award this week was great considering the wide range of divers we competed with over the weekend," said coach Hoffmann. "Her opponents ranged from conference divers to those who are at the division one, two and three levels. She performed well at both invites, and her scores were fairly consistent. Winning this late in the season is a reflection of where she is at this point in the schedule. I know she will represent Illinois State well at the MVC Championships in a few short weeks." The Redbirds have the next two weekends off and will be competing again when they head to the MVC Championships in Carbondale, Ill. beginning Feb. 13.
