Redbirds Begin Spring Semester with Ball State Dual Meet
Jan. 13, 2011
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State swimming and diving team will travel to Muncie, Ind. to start their spring semester schedule, Friday, Jan. 14 at 5 p.m. The Redbirds will compete against Ball State for their first dual meet of 2011, leading up to the 2011 Missouri Valley Conference Championships Feb. 17-19.
Head coach Steve Paska is looking forward to see how the team performs after their winter training.
"We have had very close meets against the Cardinals for the 26 years that I have been coaching and I believe this will be a very competitive meet again this year," Paska said. ""It has been over a month since the team has swam in regular dual meet setting, and since coming back from our winter training trip, our team has been terrific shape and the practices have been outstanding."
The Redbirds returned from their winter training trip in Tempe, Ariz. on Jan. 7 after competing in the winter trip meet on Jan. 1 against Arizona State, Illinois and Utah. The meet was not scored, but allowed the teams to remain competitive while gearing up for the spring semester.
A new addition to the Redbird roster is freshman April Livingston from Woodbridge, Va. April will compete as a Redbird for the first time at Friday's dual meet after signing a financial aid agreement with the team this December.
"April is a very intense trainer and is a fantastic fit with the team," Paska said. "She will contribute greatly to our breaststroke events for the remainder of the season and the three and a half years."
Diving coach Phil Hoffmann looks to set up the divers for conference through the upcoming dual meets.
"I am hoping this dual meet will better prepare the athletes for the MVC championship meet," Hoffmann said. "We had a great training trip and I hope this next few meets solidify what we need to work on to be at our best in February."
