Redbirds Fly South
SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico- The Illinois State swimming team left for San Juan, Puerto Rico on Dec. 29 to prepare for the Copa Coqui Invitational. The Redbirds will be competing Sunday, Jan. 5, at 8 a.m. CT.
The invitational is an annual winter break competition the Redbirds participate in while also taking time to sight see and explore the area. The student-athletes will be competing with ten programs from across the country including Connecticut, St. Cloud State, Illinois, South Dakota, Cleveland State, Loyola-Maryland, St. Mary's-Minnesota, Wellesley, Fordham, Puerto Rico and Wisconsin-Lacrosse.
Last season, Illinois State placed fifth overall at the Copa Coqui Invitational. This invite format is different from what the Redbirds are used to competing in. The invite is measured in long-course meters rather than the short-course yards the student-athletes usually compete in. Two returning swimmers, April Livingston and Cecilia Holmes had success in this format last year . Livingston took second place in the 100-meter (1:19.14) and homes earned third-place in the 200-meter.
Illinois State took first-place in their last competition, the Zippy Invitational at the beginning of December. This highly-competitive invite helped to prepare the student-athletes for their winter trip to Puerto Rico. The Redbirds finished the weekend off earning producing new and personal bests for the entire team.
