NOTRE DAME , Ind. - Illinois State's swimming and diving team tied Ball State for second place at the Notre Dame Relays on Friday Oct. 5. Ball State and ISU tied for second with 166 points and Notre Dame walked away with first place with a total of 226. Seniors Kathleen Borkovec and Tracy Deyell, sophomore Lindsay Dinkelman and freshman Amy Schaefer each had outstanding performances in their respective events.
The Redbirds had second-place finishes in the 300-yard freestyle relay, 400-yard butterfly relay and the 400-yard breaststroke relay.
Head coach Steve Paska was thrilled with the performance of the team.
"Tonight was a very competitive meet," said Paska. "Each team here has very solid programs at this stage of the season, but it was a fantastic night here for us as a team."
Amy Schaefer swam a total of eight events for the team.
"Amy is one of our top sprint performers," Paska said. "I am very impressed with her performance. Even though she swam eight events, she did not show signs of fatigue. We are very lucky to have her on the team for the next four years."
Team captains Borkovec and Deyell both had exceptional performances.
"Kathleen anchored a few of the relays she was in and had a very solid performance all around," Paska said. "Tracy has always been a top swimmer for us, and she is continuing the trend at the start of her senior year. I am looking forward to see what this means for the rest of the season."
Head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said the divers also had strong performances. Katie Janonis and Liza Perrino took a third place finish in the 1-meter diving relay event.
"Katie and Liza had a consistent performance," said Hoffmann. "I am looking forward to see how they come back and compete tomorrow at Northern Iowa."
