Zhang, Tazzioli Finish First Day at NCAA's
March 8, 2012
For senior Tazzioli, the competition marked the opportunity to extend her season and dive a final time for the Redbirds.
"It has been a joy to coach Brittany in the last one-meter event of her career," head diving coach Phil Hoffmann said. "Being able to compete at the NCAA's was a great accomplishment. I am proud of how she has led the team this season, and it is exciting watching her end on a high note."
The Libertyville, Ill., native qualified for NCAA's on the one-meter board multiple times over the season, which also helped her earn the MVC Diver of the Week honor five times.
Zhang, finishing 24th overall with a score of 249.55, was seven-points from qualifying for finals in the event.
"This was a new experience for both the divers, but for Wendy, diving for the first time at the NCAA's today showed she is on her way to becoming one of the top divers in our zone," Hoffmann said. "She showed a level of skill that goes head-to-head with some extremely talented and experienced divers."
Zhang is coming off a conference title on the one-meter board. The Chinese native also holds the Illinois State school record in the event.
"It will be bittersweet to watch Brittany compete for the last time tomorrow, but I am excited to see how both divers perform on the three-meter board," Hoffmann said. "Both of our student-athletes are enjoying this opportunity and taking in the experience."
Both Redbirds will resume competition Friday on the three-meter board. The event is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Live results from the competition can be found at www.divemeets.com, with Illinois State in Zone C.
