During his 22 years at Illinois State, head swimming and diving coach Steve Paska has led his team to success both in the pool and in the classroom.
A 1983 ISU graduate, Paska served as an assistant swim coach for three years prior to taking the head position in 1985. After taking over as head coach, Paska has guided countless individuals to victory.
Under his leadership, Redbird swimmers have
established 23 of the 24 current school records, claimed six Midwest Independent titles, three National Independent Championships and six Missouri Valley
Conference crowns, including the 1996 Valley Championship.
In the 2006-07 season, 28 of Paska's athletes earned MVC academic honors, including the President's Council Academic Award, Commissioner's Academic Excellence and honor roll awards.
While being dedicated to coaching his athletes in the water, Paska is also devoted to helping his swimmers succeed in the classroom. In fall 06, Redbird swimmers compiled a 3.26 grade point-average, making it the highest all time GPA for the team. In spring 2007, the team compiled a 3.19 GPA, the third-highest for the teamoverall.
Nine swimmers were named Missouri Valley Conference
Scholar-Athlete team members, while 13 swimmers were named All-Valley performers.
As a former two-time letterman and Redbird swimmer, Paska has a special passion for the University. His wife, Julie, was an all-American volleyball player at Illinois State in 1984 and currently serves Redbird student-athletes as an academic advisor. Steve and Julie have three children: Matthew (18), Dusty (16) and Jill (11).
