Sept. 29, 2010
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State softball team, along with the Bloomington-Normal Area Sports Commission and the Town of Normal Parks and Recreation, will co-host the third-annual State Farm Illinois Collegiate Softball Championship Saturday and Sunday at Champion Fields in Normal, Ill. The tournament will feature 10 NCAA Division I softball teams from the state of Illinois, as well as two junior college programs.
"Bringing this type of tournament into the town of Normal is a tremendous softball venue," head coach Melinda Fischer said. "We really appreciate the support of State Farm, the town of Normal, and the Bloomington-Normal Area Sports Commission. With 10 of the 12 Division I teams in Illinois participating in this event, I think as a person interested in potentially playing collegiate softball some day, this is a tremendous opportunity to really get a good look at what is available in the state of Illinois. Teams take a lot of pride in being able to do well in this tournament and when you have these 12 teams in one location at one time, I think it is an awesome opportunity to see what Division I softball is all about."
Teams participating in this year's tournament include: Bradley, DePaul, Eastern Illinois, Heartland Community College, Illinois State, Illinois-Chicago, Lake Land College, Northern Illinois, Northwestern, Southern Illinois, SIU Edwardsville, and Western Illinois.
"The Bloomington-Normal Area Sports Commission is very excited that this event has continued to strengthen in its third year with these great teams, and we look forward to another great tournament," said Matt Hawkins, sports marketing manager of the Bloomington-Normal Area Sports Commission and ICSC Tournament Director.
