Redbird Softball Continues Spring Break Trip in Missouri

NORMAL, Ill. – The Illinois State softball team will continue its spring break trip at the Children’s Hospital Invitational hosted by Missouri, Saturday-Sunday, at the University Softball Field in Columbia, Mo. The Redbirds (10-8) will take on San Diego State (6 p.m. CST) and New Mexico (8 p.m. CST) Saturday, followed by a Sunday matchup against tournament host and No. 3 ranked Missouri (2 p.m. CST).

No. 3 Missouri will be the sixth ranked opponent that Illinois State has faced this season. The Redbirds are 1-4 in 2010 against ranked foes, having previously defeated Arizona State, 10-9, in nine innings at the Littlewood Classic before falling to UMass, Texas and Tennessee twice.

San Diego State will also be a tough game for Illinois State, as the Aztecs are receiving 11 votes in the USA Today/NFCA Coaches Poll and two votes in the Softball Poll.

Illinois State enters the Children’s Hospital Invitational with a combined 11-15 record all-time against its tournament opponents. The Redbirds own a 2-0 series lead against San Diego State and are tied, 2-2, in the all-time series with New Mexico. Missouri leads ISU in the all-time series, 13-7.

Niki Stansell and Jhavon Hamilton each went four-for-four at the plate and led the Illinois State softball team over Southeast Missouri State, 12-1, Thursday at the Southeast Softball Complex in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Stansell drove in three Redbird runs, while Hamilton pushed across two runs.
