Olson Named Valley Player of the Week
March 1, 2010
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State junior third baseman Abby Olson sent two home runs over the left field fence in the first day of play at the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Leadoff Classic Friday Feb. 26. Due to her strong performance at the plate with a solid defensive showing at the tournament, Olson earned the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week honor, as announced by the league office Monday.
Olson batted .400 (6-15) in the tournament with two home runs, including a grand slam against North Carolina State. The Hartsburg, Ill., native was named to the NFCA All-Tournament Team, as announced at the conclusion of the tournament.
"I thought Abby had a good weekend, especially early in the tournament," said head coach Melinda Fischer. "Her hits were huge factors in our wins over NC State and Auburn. The grand slam was fun. I think she had a great opportunity against the pitch she saw in the extra inning game with Auburn and put the ball over the fence to give us the lead. Actually, I thought she played really well defensively too. It was a very consistent tournament for Abby."
Against NC State, Olson doubled up the middle to score the first Redbird run. In the bottom of the fourth, with one out and the bases loaded, Olson stepped in the batter's box for the second time in the inning and hit a grand slam over the left field fence. Olson recorded five RBIs against NC State.
Heading into the top of the ninth against Auburn with no outs, Olson hit her second homer of the day. The hit marked Olson's fourth homerun of the season. Her homer gave ISU the largest lead of the game that they went on to win.
Over the weekend, Olson tallied six hits and nine RBIs. She had 13 total bases with two homeruns and a double. She recorded six put outs and 14 assists without an error over the five games.
After competing in all of ISU's 13 games, Olson holds a .417 batting average.
Olson is the second Redbird to receive the honor this season. Michelle Henderson earned the honor last week.
The Redbirds will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., to compete in the First Tennessee Tournament. ISU will play four games over two days (March 6-7) where they will face Ohio, Texas and Tennessee, who they will compete against twice in the tournament.
