Birch and Redbird Softball Knock-Off Kent State, 2-1
Feb. 15, 2009
TEMPE, Ariz. - Illinois State freshman pitcher Jordan Birch (2-2) picked up her second win in the circle allowing only one hit as the Redbirds (4-6) picked up their second win of the weekend in the final game of the Littlewood Classic knocking off the Kent State Golden Flashes (5-5), 2-1 at Farrington Stadium in Tempe, Ariz., Sunday afternoon.
"It was a great ball game," said head coach Melinda Fischer. "From a spectators standpoint I really thought it was a pitching dual. We were really fortunate that Casey (Gorrell) got a homerun and got us on the board in the first inning and then got that insurance run in the fifth. I thought that we hung in there and I think that Jordan did a great job."
Casey Gorrell gave the Redbirds the early lead hitting a solo homerun in the bottom of the first inning. Then in the fifth inning Gorrell helped the `Birds score their second run. With the bases loaded and two outs, Gorrell sent pitch runner Caiti Kopp home when she was hit by a wild ball from Kent State's pitcher Kylie Reynolds, driving in the Illinois State runner.
The Golden Flashes Maria Conti scored Kent State's only run, hitting a pinch-hit solo homerun in the top of the seventh inning. The homerun was the only hit Birch allowed in seven frames in the circle. Birch a native of Monroe, Wash., walked two batters and struck out 12.
The Redbirds will have a week off before heading to the NFCA Leadoff Classic held in Columbus, Ga., Feb. 27-March 1.
