ST. LOUIS - Illinois State soccer redshirt junior goalkeeper Aryn Newsom is the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, as announced by Commissioner Doug Elgin. Now in its 15th year of existence, the Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance in a one-week period and continued academic success.

Newsom was instrumental in the Redbirds becoming the first team in the history of the MVC to advance to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, Saturday. She stopped 11 shots in regulation and two overtime periods, as ISU battled Louisville to a 1-1 draw. Then, in the penalty kick shootout, Newsom stopped two Louisville attempts before Dagny Olson sent the Redbirds to the second round by converting the final PK for a 4-3 victory.

Newsom was named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Year after surrendering just two goals in Valley games, while registering four shutouts. For the season, Newsom has posted a goals-against average of 1.24 and saves percentage of .781. Her 35-career victories are one shy of the program's all-time mark, with her 228-career saves also ranking second all-time.

Academically, Newsom has accumulated a 3.83 grade-point average (GPA) as an exercise science major. The weekly honor is her second this season, as she also earned it on Sept. 18. Additionally, Newsom was named to the MVC women's soccer Scholar-Athlete First Team for the first time in her career, Tuesday.

To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.

The Redbirds will take on third-seeded and 11th-ranked Michigan in a second-round NCAA Tournament match, Friday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Kickoff is slated for 6 p.m., CST.
