Aryn Newsom Named MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week
Sept. 18, 2013
ST. LOUIS - Illinois State soccer redshirt junior goalkeeper Aryn Newsom is the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week, as announced by Commissioner Doug Elgin Wednesday afternoon. Now in its 15th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance in a one-week period and academic success.
Newsom's play has been instrumental to the Redbirds posting three-straight victories. Against SEMO on Friday, Newsom made two saves, both coming in the first half, to post the clean sheet in a 4-0 win. She was much busier Sunday, however, making a career-high 13 saves in the win over No. 22 Marquette. After the Redbirds jumped out to a 3-0 first-half lead, the Golden Eagles put their attack in to high gear, drawing within one in the 74th minute. Newsom stood tall, though, making 10 of her 13 saves in the second half. She made one save in ISU's 4-1 win over Saint Louis, Tuesday.
Now in her third-straight year as ISU's primary keeper, Newsom has accumulated 26 victories, which ranks second in program-history. She has also made 178 saves, the third-most all-time.
Newsom posted a 4.0 semester grade-point average (GPA) in the spring, and holds a 3.83 cumulative GPA in exercise science. The Manteno, Ill., native was a MVC Scholar-Athlete Team honorable mention selection in 2012.
Newsom joins Kyla Cross as MVC Scholar-Athlete of the Week winners this season from the Redbird soccer team. Before Cross' week-one win, no ISU soccer player had claimed the award since 2009.
To qualify for Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing.
Newsom and the Redbirds complete a four-game homestand against Milwaukee, Friday, before playing at Kansas, Sunday.
