TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Redbird junior Alyssa Schulz scored a personal career-high for goals in a game with two as the Illinois State women's soccer team opened up its Missouri Valley Conference season with a 4-2 win over Indiana State Saturday, marking its third-straight win.

The Redbird offense started strong, scoring four goals in just five minutes during the first half including two from Schulz. The Redbirds' first goal came from Schulz off a long pass from the middle from Natalie McCabe, 21 minutes into the game. Three minutes later, Jessica Carlson scored her fourth goal of the season off an assist by Rachel Bostick.

Schulz scored her second goal just two minutes later, 26 minutes into the game from 10 yards out. The Redbirds' final goal in the half came from Raquel Rattray 35 minutes into the half.

"We finished well in the first half," said head coach Drew Roff. "I was very pleased to see Alyssa step up and score a couple nice goals. In the second half, we seemed to take out foot off the gas a bit, which was disappointing. It wasn't the performance I was hoping for, but it is a conference win on the road. So, we'll take it, learn from it and improve for the next game."

Indiana State's Seyma Erenli led the Sycamores with one goal and one assist. Erenli scored the Sycamores' first goal 25 minutes into the game off a free kick, while Morgan Wendlandt scored their second goal 78 minutes in on a header goal off Erenli's free kick.

Katie Grill-Donovan played as goalkeeper for the Redbirds in the first half, recording one goal allowed and one save. Sasha Reiber came in for the Redbirds in the second half, recording one goal allowed and two saves.

Illinois State is 5-5-1 overall and 1-0 in Valley play this season, while Indiana State falls to 3-8-1 overall and 0-2 in the MVC.

Illinois State leads the all-time series against Indiana State, 9-3-0.

The Redbirds will return home Wednesday for a mid-week game against SIU-Edwardsville at 4 p.m. The Redbirds continue conference play next Sunday (Oct. 11) hosting Valley leader Creighton at 1 p.m. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, TRC gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
