Redbirds Suffer First Loss of Season to Northwestern, 1-0
Sept. 1, 2008
EVANSTON, Ill. - The Illinois State soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Monday, falling to Northwestern, 1-0, on the final day of competition of the Lakeside Invitational. The Redbirds dropped to 3-1-0 on the season, while Northwestern improved to 2-1-0. Both teams were 1-1 at the Lakeside Invitational.
Junior goalkeeper Katie Grill-Donovan made six saves in goal for ISU. The Redbirds were held to just two shots in the game. Grill-Donovan and junior midfielder Raquel Rattray were both named to the all-tournament team.
"It was a frustrating game because we didn't ever seem to find a good rhythm," said head coach Drew Roff. "We didn't control the ball very well and seemed to be on defense most of the time, which can be mentally and physically draining. Northwestern is a very athletic team with good team speed and they used that to their advantage. We knew the type of game they were going to play, but we just had a hard time putting passes together to mount an attack on offense. They put pressure on our defense, but the players showed great effort and the game was never out of reach by any means."
In the 32nd minute, Northwestern had back-to-back corner kicks, capitalizing on the second one. Jenny Dunn served the ball into the box and Jennifer Baumann headed in the game-winner for the Wildcats. Northwestern had three shots and two corner kicks in the first half, against just one shot and two corners for the Redbirds. Freshman midfielder Natalie McCabe had ISU's shot right before the end of the first half, but it was saved.
The Wildcats continued to control the pace in the second half. Registering six shots to just one for Illinois State. Grill-Donovan made four saves to keep the game close, but ISU was unable to score the equalizer. Sophomore forward Alyssa Schulz had a shot in the 86th minute, but that was saved as well.
The Redbirds are on the road again Friday when they visit Purdue at 4:30 p.m.
