NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State soccer team played the 14th ranked Memphis Tigers to a 1-1 draw Friday afternoon at Adelaide Street Field. The contest was the second exhibition match of the season for the Redbirds, who are now 1-0-1 in pre-season contests.

Rachel Bostick opened the scoring in the 12th minute by heading home a free kick service from Kristin Cooley. Bostick scored four goals in 2011, while Cooley had three assists. The 1-0 Redbird advantage held until late in the second half. In the 71st minute, Memphis' Marissa Duguay rose above the ISU defense and scored on a header of her own off of a corner kick by Emily Adamic to tie the game at 1-1.

Each side threatened in the final 18 minutes with two shots apiece, but the score held firm. Since the match was an exhibition, no overtime periods were carried out.

"I was pleased with our performance," head coach Drew Roff said. "Against a team like Memphis, you're going to have to battle. Every ball you have to challenge and you also have to be organized because they are very athletic, very organized and very talented. We competed and our defensive organization was solid."

The first half featured a more open style of play from both sides. The two teams combined for 16 shots, with Memphis having nine and Illinois State having seven. The second half slightly tightened up, as the Tigers registered six shots to the Redbirds' three.

The exhibition portion of the Redbirds' schedule will be completed Sunday, Aug. 12, when Eastern Michigan comes to Adelaide Street Field for a 12 p.m. kick-off. The regular season officially begins Aug. 17, when the Redbirds travel to Southeast Missouri State.
