NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior gymnast Sami King was selected to compete in the balance beam competition in the 2014 NCAA Regionals at the University of Arkansas Saturday, April 5 at 4:00 p.m. in Barnhill arena.

Head coach Bob Conkling is excited to see King's hard work pay off as she competes alongside the top gymnasts in the country.

"We are very excited that Sami King has qualified to regionals again this season," Conkling said. "Sami has trained hard all season and this week has been no different for her. Sami has been to regionals before so she knows what to expect and will be comfortable with the process and competition."

This will be King's third year competing at the NCAA Regional, as she took 16th place overall as a freshman with a score of 38.450 and as a sophomore took sixth with a score of 39.125.

The Canton, Mich. Native won the balance beam competition at the Midwest Independent Conference Championships last weekend with a season-high score of 9.875. King was named MIC Specialist of the Week in February after scoring a career-best 9.925 on the floor exercise and winning the balance beam competition with a 9.825 in a quad meet involving UIC, Northern Illinois and Illinois. Additionally, King was named MIC Gymnast of the Week in March after winning three out of the four events and scoring a season-high 39.200 in a victory over Penn.

The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the national championships in Birmingham, Ala. April 18-20, hosted by the University of Alabama. In addition, the event winners at each regional site will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or an all-around qualifier.

King will compete in the first rotation along with the rest of the team from UC Davis.
