NORMAL, Ill. - Illinois State junior Sami King won three out of the four events and scored a season-high 39.200 in her first week back competing in the all-around competition after injury to take first place and help the Redbirds pick up a victory over Penn. For her efforts, she was named Midwest Independent Conference (MIC) Gymnast of the Week on Wednesday.
King placed first on the floor (9.850), bars (9.825) and vault (9.775) and took third place on beam (9.750) in her best all-round performance of the year. Last week, King did not compete in the all-around competition, but scored a career-best 9.925 to win the floor exercise and also won the balance beam competition by posting a 9.825 to tie her season-high and was awarded MIC Specialist of the Week honors.
The Canton, Mich. native was also named MIC Gymnast of the week during her freshman year, after she won the all-around competition in her first collegiate meet. Last season, King was awarded MIC Gymnast of the week after winning the all-around competition against Lindenwood and Northern Illinois.
Joining King as a weekly honoree was sophomore Kerensa Mitchell of UIC. The Nahaimo, British Columbia, native scored a personal-best 9.825 in the beam competition to take third place against Ball State to contribute to UIC's best beam score (48.750) of the season.
King and her teammates will return to action Sunday, March 9, when they head to Cape Girardeau, Mo., to take on Southeast Missouri in a dual-meet at 1:00 p.m. in Houck Field House.
