Feb. 1, 2014
NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team scored a season high team score of 191.800 at the fourth annual quad meet against Illinois-Chicago, Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan on Saturday in Mt. Pleasant, Mich.
CMU won the meet with a score of 196.000, followed by EMU with a score of 194.800, UIC posted a 192.650 to take third and the Redbirds took fourth. Overall, the state of Michigan won the battle between the states 390.800-384.450.
Head Coach Bob Conkling was pleased with the resiliency the team showed after beginning the meet with a disappointing balance beam rotation.
"While Sami King and Kim Caron started us off well, overall the balance beam rotation was rocky," Conkling said. "We regrouped and went to the floor rotation and we ended up having our best floor exercise score this year. I was really pleased with the vault and uneven bars rotations and I believe we had our best score on bars this season."
Caron scored a season high 9.725 on the floor exercise on her way to posting a season best all-around score of 38.275. Freshman Samantha Ward competed on the floor exercise for the first time and posted a solid score of 9.600.
Sophomore Sarah Fisher led the way to a season high 48.125 overall floor exercise score by matching her season high score of 9.775. In the last rotation, King contributed a 9.850 on the uneven bars to lead the Redbirds to a season best score of 48.850. Senior Jenna Bossle scored a season high of her own on the uneven bars with an impressive 9.850.
"We started off rocky and the team came back and finished the competition strong on the last three events," Conkling said. "We have to keep improving to hit all four events and I know the team is capable of that. The team and I feel good about what we showed today but we know we can always keep improving."
The Redbirds return to action when they welcome Alaska-Anchorage to Horton Field House on Friday, Feb. 7 at 7:00 p.m.
