NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's gymnastics team posted a season high score of 190.400-187.900 to secure their first win of the season in a dual meet against Penn in Philadelphia, Pa., Saturday at Hutchinson Gymnasium.

Junior Sami King led the way for the Redbirds as she took first place in the all-around after posting a score of 38.975. Senior Kimberly Caron contributed a score of 37.375 to take third place in the all-around.

Head coach Bob Conkling was pleased with the performance of his team as a whole and their improvement from last week.

"We started off strong on vault, everybody hit their routines," Conkling said. "I was really happy with Heather Pena's performance on beam and Demi Pas hit both her beam and floor exercises. It was the first time they fought with high energy as a team throughout the entire meet."

Junior Pena competed on the balance beam for the first time this season and recorded an impressive 9.700. Freshman Pas improved her balance beam score to a 9.650 after scoring below a 9.200 for the previous two meets.

The Redbirds led from the first rotation after posting a score of 47.250 and never lost the lead from that point on. King led the way on vault by recording a score of 9.700 and sophomore Sarah Fisher followed with a 9.550. The team posted solid numbers of 47.950 on the uneven bars, 47.700 on the balance beam and 47.500 on the floor exercise rotations to secure the victory.

The Redbirds return to action on Jan. 24 at home against conference rival Lindenwood at 7 p.m. in Horton Field House. Your online source for Illinois State Athletics, tickets, Weisbecker Scholarship Fund gifts, multimedia, Redbird merchandise, photos and more.
