NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State gymnastics team will travel to Ames, Iowa to take on Iowa State and Michigan Jan. 10 at 6:30 p.m. inside Hilton Coliseum.

Head Coach Bob Conkling and his team battled bad weather and limited practice times during the week of preparation for two tough opponents.

"We worked mostly on consistency and confidence in routines to prepare for one of our toughest competitions this season," said Conkling.

The Redbirds faced Ball State last weekend to open the 2014 season. Junior Sami King took home the all-around title with a score of 39.000. Following King was teammate Jenna Bossle who posted an all-around score of 37.575 to begin her senior season.

The Cyclones will look to build on their season-opening performance against No. 15 Penn State. Iowa State fell to the Nittany Lions by a score of 193.925-193.550. Iowa State junior Caitlin Brown won the all-around competition by posting a career-high score of 38.900.

Friday's tri-meet in Ames will officially begin Michigan's 2014 season. Joanna Sampson led the Wolverines to an exhibition victory over Central Michigan on Dec. 8, by winning the all-around title as well as three individual event titles.

"Both Michigan and Iowa State are very strong teams. Our main goal is to go out on the competition floor and have each gymnast perform their routines to the best of their ability," Conkling said. "If we meet that goal, then the coaches and the team will be satisfied with the final result."
