NORMAL, Ill. -The Illinois State gymnastics dominated the Midwest Independent Conference Championship meet Saturday night, as five Redbird gymnasts achieved positions on the MIC Conference First Team.

The Redbirds earned a team score of 194.800. Following Illinois State was Illinois-Chicago in second place with a score of 194.725, Texas Woman's in third place with a score of 194.050, Centenary in fourth place with a score of 191.300, and Southeast Missouri in fifth place with a score of 191.225.

Head Coach Bob Conkling is ecstatic the Redbirds won the conference title this season.

"I'm thrilled that we won conference this year," said Conkling. "The girls were solid on every event. They really had a great competition all around. They kept a positive attitude throughout the meet, and I think it really was beneficial to the team, and key to our success."

All team members who placed in the top three in any event earned a spot on the MIC Conference First Team.

Junior Kim Genereux led the team with a first place finish in the all-around competition with a score of 39.00. Genereux placed second in floor exercise with a score of 9.800, following teammate Apollonia Barrientos, earning a score of 9.825. Barrientos also placed third on uneven bars with a score of 9.775.

Sophomore Elise Gray earned a third place finish on vault with a score of 9.800. Senior Robin Weissman placed first on uneven bars, earning a season high score of 9.825, and freshman Samantha King placed second on the balance beam with a score of 9.850.

Conkling is happy the five gymnasts earned spots on the conference First Team.

"All the gymnasts who placed did a fantastic job tonight," said Conkling. "It's so hard in this conference to place as well as we did. Kim Genereux led the team with first in the all-around, and I am very happy for her. All five of the team members deserved to be on conference first team, and I am so happy for the team as a whole."
