`Birds Place Second in Kentucky Tri-Meet

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Illinois State gymnastics finished its last regular-season meet with a second place finish in a tri-meet against Kentucky and George Washington Friday night at the Memorial Coliseum in Lexington, Ky. Kentucky finished first with a team score of 194.650, followed by the Redbirds with a 193.275 and George Washington with a 191.150.
The Redbirds started the meet on the floor exercise and posted a 47.875. The `Birds then moved onto the vault and uneven bars, slating scores of 48.475 and 48.250, respectively. ISU finished the meet with its strongest performances on the balance beam and scored a 48.675.
Head coach Bob Conkling was impressed by the team's improvements on the vault and performances on the balance beam.
"I thought the entire team performed really well tonight," Conkling said. "The team really stepped up and improved on the vault. The student-athletes hit their routines and stuck their landings really well. I was so proud of the routines on the balance beam as well, the team rocked it."
Hannah Deutsch and Melissa Mann led the Redbirds on the balance beam and placed second and third in the meet with scores of 9.825 and 9.800, respectively. Tori Sarantakis posted a 9.800 on the vault. Erica Schick earned two second-place titles, on the uneven bars (9.775) and in the all around (38.850).
"I was so impressed by the student-athletes performances on the balance beam," Conkling said. "Erica performed a beautiful routine and Andrea Orris, Melissa and Hannah were amazing tonight. Overall, this was a great meet for the team."
The Redbirds return home to host the State of Illinois Classic meet Saturday, March 20 in Redbird Arena. The meet is set to begin at 5 p.m. and will feature Illinois-Champaign, Illinois-Chicago and Northern Illinois.
