Women's Golf Begins 2007-08 Season at Badger Invitational
Sept. 8, 2007
NORMAL, Ill. - - The Illinois State women's golf team gets its fall season under way this weekend as the Redbirds head north to Madison, Wis. to compete in the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course September 9th-10th.
First-year head coach Darby Sligh is looking forward to heading into competition with her new team.
"I am looking forward to kicking off the season," said Sligh. "Our girls have worked very hard since I have been here and we have made major improvements, especially in our short game."
The Redbird women have no seniors on their roster, but will be led this weekend by junior co-captain Marci Hill. Rounding out the weekend tournament roster are sophomores Britt Knutson, Stacey Miller, Laura Harris and true freshman Terra Miller, who is making her collegiate debut. Sophomore Christine Larson will compete individually for the Redbirds.
Although the fall season does not culminate with a conference or NCAA Tournament, it can be a valuable tool in building momentum towards the spring season, developing team chemistry and helping young players acclimate to the college game.
"We want to go up there and win, but we want to start the season off on a positive note," said Sligh. "We want this to be a stepping stone for the rest of the season."
The 54-hole event begins Sunday at 8:30 a.m. The participating teams will play 36 holes on Sunday, finishing with 18 holes on Monday, beginning at 8 a.m.
