Redbirds Open Spring Season at the Illinois Challenge

Jan. 31, 2014

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team will head to the warm weather in Venice, Fla., to compete in the sixth-annual Illinois Challenge Sunday, February 2. The event will be played at the par-72, 5,094-yard Venice Golf and Country Club and will feature a dual meet against in-state rival Illinois. At the meet, the teams will compete in four ball matches, before golfers from each school go head-to-head in the individual matches in an all-day event.

Head coach Darby Sligh looks to her squad to begin the spring season strong and achieve its first victory in the Challenge's six-year existence.

"We love being a part of this event. It brings such a high level of competitiveness but also fuels early winter preparation, which has been huge for us this winter having been so cold," Sligh explained. "I'm looking for upperclassmen leadership to propel us forward this weekend. This is an incredibly strong Illinois squad, perhaps the strongest line-up we will have faced so far in the history of this event. I think this brings an even greater focus to our team, and I'm looking forward to seeing what we can put together."

Competing for Illinois State will be seniors Carlee Cossell, Jordyn Wyzgowski and Rachel Powers. Juniors Hayley Guyton and Lauren English, in her first game as a Redbird, sophomore Courtnee Cossell and freshmen Maggie Ambrose and Renee Solberg will round out the Redbird lineup.
