Illinois Challenge Preview with Darby Sligh

NORMAL, Ill. - The Illinois State women's golf team will travel to Venice, Fla., to compete in the one-day, four-ball partner Illinois Challenge against Illinois Saturday, at the Sarasota National Golf Club. The morning session of four-ball matches will be followed by an afternoon session of individual matches on the par 72, 6,034 yard course.

The Redbirds will tee up against the Illini Saturday at 8:00 a.m. (EST). Scores will be available at the conclusion of the challenge at GolfStat.com.

The four-ball matches will include players being paired up with members of their team to compete two-on-two against pairs from partners of the opposing team. ISU's pairings are Terra Miller and Rachel Powers, Jordyn Wyzgowski and Brianna Cooper, Katie Jean and Kaitlin Reid and Hannah Bachman and Carlee Cossell.

All eight of ISU's players will also compete in the afternoon's individual matches.

"As a team, we are looking forward to competing on grass in the midst of such a harsh winter," said head coach Darby Sligh. "We are going to use this event as not only a chance to compete against a very talented Illinois team, but also to take advantage of learning to compete and work together in a partner setting. We are very young, but talented in a way that competitive learning experiences can still lead to team victories. I am looking for this group to use their unique team chemistry to come together and pull one out for the Redbirds."

This year's challenge will be the third-annual competition between the two in-state rivals. The first-ever Illinois Challenge took place Jan. 26, 2009, at the Hideout Golf Club in Naples, Fla., where the Redbirds fell to the Illini, 7-6. In last year's Illinois Challenge, the `Birds were unable to tie up the young match history, losing to Illinois, 9-3.

Senior Terra Miller has been a part of the Illinois Challenge each year since its start in 2009.

"This tournament is a great chance for us to get on grass and we are looking forward to taking advantage of the opportunity we have been given," Miller said. "The young players on the team will be exposed to a different form of competition in this tournament, which will better prepare them for future tournaments this season."
