DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Seniors Rachel Powers and Brianna Cooper led the Illinois State women's golf team in the first round of play Saturday in Daytona Beach, Fla., at the LPGA Xavier Invitational. Powers finished the day with an impressive score of 74, which tied her for fifth place, just one-stroke behind the leader. While, Cooper carded a 75 placing her tied for ninth at the par-72 the LPGA International Golf Club.

Head coach Darby Sligh felt her team had a strong start and hopes to continue this momentum in the remaining rounds.

"We are getting closer to where we need to be mentally and physically but we still haven't been able to put it all together as a team," Sligh Said. "I was happy to see Rachel [Powers], Brianna [Copper] and Hayley [Guyton] play solidly all day, and we will need more of that all year long. After today all said and done, I wouldn't say we are excited about our team score today, but we are looking forward to redemption tomorrow."

Junior Hayley Guyton also contributed another noteworthy performance. Guyton shot a 77, finishing tied for 21st place on the individual leaderboard.

Rounding out the Redbird lineup was Freshman Maggie Ambrose with a score of 89, followed by senior Carlee Cossesll who shot a day one score of 90.

Daytona State finished first for the day with all five of its golfers placing in the top 15. Morehead State is just 2 strokes behind in second with a score of 302, two strokes ahead of third-place host school Xavier with a 303.

ISU looks to climb the rankings in the second round of play Sunday, beginning at 7:30 a.m. (CST), with a shotgun start.
